Travelling when you’re plant based isn’t always the easiest. Especially when you go to more rural places, the options can be pretty limited! Since the Holiday season is upon us and you may be venturing outside your bubble to visit family members, I wanted to share my tips!
What I Pack:
- Instant Pot
- Berkey, water purifier
- Coffee beans + grinder, gotta have good coffee ;)
- Breakfast – oats for oatmeal and tofu for scrambles
- Grill nights – burgers, baked beans, fixings
- Dinner options – ingredients for rice and bean bowls
- Smoothies – frozen mango, pineapple, greens, bananas, and hemp seeds
- Bananas, lots of bananas
- Hummus and veggies
- Fresh fruit
Of course, if you’re flying and don’t want to check a bag, you may need to pare this down a little. Try booking places to stay that have some of these essentials such as a blender and coffee maker. Air B&B is a great way to stay in a place with a full kitchen too so you can even cook some meals. That way you can travel light and wait until you get to your destination to hit a grocery store.
Finding Plant-Based Food:
If you really can’t pack much or stay in a place with a full kitchen, I have some tips for finding places to eat out. There are several chain places that have good plant-based options (but if you’re gluten free like me it might be harder to find something!). Places like Chipotle, Mediterranean places, Asian places (think tofu stir fries, curries or Poke bowls), and even some sandwich shops offer some great options. Recently, many food establishments have added at least one vegan option to their menu, so even if it’s a not-so-healthy Beyond Burger or something like that, if it saves you while you’re away from home for a couple days, I say go for it! There’s also an app called Happy Cow that can also help you locate food nearby that suits particular diet needs.
What are you go-to plant based snacks when travelling?
Eating more plants can come with its challenges. There’s a lot of nutrition noise out there, everyone has an opinion, and it can be confusing to figure out what works best for YOU. Working through these challenges and learning how to easily incorporate more plant-based foods into your diet and lifestyle can be helpful.
