Dieting, as we are talking about it here is the short-term, restrictive approach to weight loss. According to the CDC, between 2013-2016, almost HALF of the adults in the US reported they had tried to lose weight in the last 12 months, typically through “eating less food” and exercising. It’s likely that number is even higher today. The scary part? For chronic dieters, the odds are against you that you’ll maintain the weight you lose. Here are some reasons why the diet mindset doesn’t work:
Failure:
If you feel like you keep failing at a diet, it’s probably the diet that’s failing YOU. Restrictive diets are often not sustainable, easy, or even enjoyable.
Self-Esteem
It’s estimated that about 95% of people who lose weight by dieting, gain all of their weight back in less than 5 years. Again, “failing” a diet and having to start all over again is disheartening. Not to mention, the constant cycle of weight fluctuation can disrupt your body’s metabolic functions, making it increasingly harder to lose weight and maintain it.
Social Anxiety
Overly restrictive diets can take the enjoyment out of eating. With little flexibility, this inhibits going out to at and attending parties and social gatherings or at the very least, being able to enjoy time out with friends and family, creating stress and tension.
I work with clients who have tried many different diets and they’re simply FED UP. They’re looking for a sustainable approach, an approach that makes them feel GOOD, which they weren’t able to find while dieting.
When working together, we figure out (on an individual level) how food can be simple, enjoyable, and include lots of plants without restriction and without stress.
Eating more plants can come with its challenges. There’s a lot of nutrition noise out there, everyone has an opinion, and it can be confusing to figure out what works best for YOU. Working through these challenges and learning how to easily incorporate more plant-based foods into your diet and lifestyle can be helpful. Working with a plant-based dietitian to guide you through your unique journey and surrounding yourself with other like-minded people who are on a similar journey can be monumental. When you join my nutrition coaching program, you’ll get a highly customized, one-on-one experience to help you confidently and sustainably eat foods that taste good and make you feel good.
