Do you want to increase your consumption of plant-based items but are afraid of a decrease in wallet size? In this post, I’ll cover all of the pantry staples I recommend buying in bulk, to save you time and money!
It is a common misconception that vegan items are more expensive than animal products. And while many more “modern” foods such as mock meats can be on the pricier side, a lot of good ol’ pantry staples are relatively cheap – especially when you know where to buy them.
My secret tip: buy as much as you can in wholesale. Not only will it maximize your pantry quality as well as quantity, but it is also one of the most budget-friendly ways to buy your food.
Although I personally could spend hours in a supermarket, most people simply don’t have the time for that. This is where buying wholesale will not only save you money but also time. Because if you buy ingredients in bigger amounts you will keep your pantry stocked for longer. And a lot of the items mentioned below will last you a long time or can be kept in the freezer.
Items I buy in bulk at Costco
Tofu
Organic, extra-firm tofu is a household staple. It’s full of nutrients like fiber, potassium, magnesium, iron, copper and manganese and a great source of protein. Plus, it can be prepared in many ways, like what is shown in this Instagram Reel. The tofu at Costco is larger and cheaper than most conventional grocery stores.
Sauces and dips
There are an abundance of vegan ones available, just make sure they don’t contain any animal products. Two of my favorites right now are Bitchin’ Sauce and hummus.
Nut butters, like almond or peanut butter
Nut butters can be used for a lot of things from oatmeal and smoothies to desserts and sauces. Nut butters can be quite expensive so buying them in bulk, especially if you enjoy using them like I do, can save you a lot of money.
Fun snacks
If you’re hosting a party or have people in your house that enjoy snacking (it’s me!), buying snacks in bulk can be a money save. My favorite ones from Costco at the moment are apple chips, churros strips, hippeas, and birthday cake granola.
Burgers
I love that my Costco offers Impossible and Beyond burgers at a more affordable price than a regular grocery store! I also love a good black bean burger and vegan chicken patty.
Nuts
My go-to’s here are are almonds, pecans, cashews, and walnuts. Basically all of them! Buying nuts in bulk can save you some serious cash, especially if you go through them quickly or make lots of cashew cheese sauces like I do.
Dates
Juicy pitted caramel trapped in the body of a fruit? Sign me up! A lot of plant-based recipes call for dates so if you find yourself going through small packages often, I recommend buying them in bulk. They last a while and can be easier on your wallet when purchased in larger quantities.
Seeds
Are you a seed lover? If you go through chia seeds, hemp hearts, and pepitas frequently, buying them in bulk can save you money and time because you’re not going back to the grocery store to buy more.
Seasonal fruit
Get it while it’s in season.
Spices
Often the secret ingredient to tasty meals is a variety of different herbs and spices. If you have a particular spice you go through quickly, see if you can buy it in bulk. Garlic powder is top of the list for me.
Beans and rice
Beans and rice are staple ingredients in most plant-based households. They’re already affordable but can be even more affordable when you buy them in bulk. You can check out all my pantry essentials for a new plant-based eater.
Depending on the size of your household, once or maybe twice a month might be enough to get you through an entire month without having to buy certain products again – and yet you will have so many vegan essentials at hand all the time!
