Let’s be real, if you grew up eating the standard American diet like me, changing how you eat entirely can be very overwhelming at first. I’ve found some approachable ways to pick and choose from to make the transition to ‘more plants’ less frightening and easy to access!
START SMALL:
Make smaller changes throughout your day. Whether you start my switching the milk you choose in your morning latte or change your breakfast from eggs to a loaded oatmeal bowl, small changes eventually add up to big outcomes!
INCREASE AND ADD:
Rather than eliminating meat or restricting your meat intake, try making the meat portion of your meal smaller and add in other items like legumes, grains, and vegetables to your meals! You can even explore with some of the plant-based meat products out there.
MEATLESS MONDAY-ISH:
This is similar to the start small concept! When switching towards a plant-based lifestyle, it is completely okay to start by making one switch each day, similar to the meatless Monday concept. Instead of going all in at once, try making the transition one day a week and gradually this can help in making this a sustainable lifestyle.
DON’T OVERTHINK IT:
Simple choices, simple changes, simple starts. Starting a new lifestyle with easy switches make the change less overwhelming and more attainable! Allow yourself to have FUN with it, instead of making it feel like a chore.
And remember, these are your choices, your decisions, not anyone else’s so you do the best approach for you.
Eating more plants can come with its challenges. There’s a lot of nutrition noise out there, everyone has an opinion, and it can be confusing to figure out what works best for YOU. Working through these challenges and learning how to easily incorporate more plant-based foods into your diet and lifestyle can be helpful.
Working with a plant-based dietitian to guide you through your unique journey and surrounding yourself with other like-minded people who are on a similar journey can be monumental. When you join my nutrition coaching program, you’ll get a highly customized, one-on-one experience to help you confidently and sustainably eat foods that taste good and make you feel good.
