When I turned plant based, Nick carried on his usual diet. He did actually choose to be plant based 4 years after (which has made things a lot easier!)
BUT if your partner isn’t planning to join the plant based life any time soon, here are a few things we learned which may help if you’re both finding it a little tricky…
Focus on who they are not what they eat
You aren’t with this person because they eat exactly the same way you do. And they may not have expected you to make this drastic change so don’t make it a focal point of the relationship. We all have our differences so remember the other reasons why you love them.
Have respect for each other
if they are fine with you eating plants, don’t get mad or make them feel guilty for eating meat. Simple as that. We have to remain judgment-free and allow each other to live the way we want to.
Cook your meals together.
Try and create similar bases and add your different extras. Some easy ones are taco bowls with rice/beans and your partner can make some ground turkey/chicken to add to theirs. Another one is stir fry – tofu versus whatever meat but all the veggies, rice and sauce stay the same.
Overtime their habits might change
They might subconsciously reduce their meat and dairy intake. Especially if you’re the one shopping and planning the meals. If you’re lucky they’ll see the benefits of this and want to make the change with you, but recognize that even small reductions in these products is a win!
Main takeaway: have respect and focus on why you love the pants off them, not why they’re not eating more broccoli.
Are both you and your partner plant based or just you?
Eating more plants can come with its challenges. There’s a lot of nutrition noise out there, everyone has an opinion, and it can be confusing to figure out what works best for YOU. Working through these challenges and learning how to easily incorporate more plant-based foods into your diet and lifestyle can be helpful.
Working with a plant-based dietitian to guide you through your unique journey and surrounding yourself with other like-minded people who are on a similar journey can be monumental. When you join my nutrition coaching program, you’ll get a highly customized, one-on-one experience to help you confidently and sustainably eat foods that taste good and make you feel good.
