Eating plant-based can be affordable – despite what you might have heard before. That’s because a plant-based diet includes and also celebrates some of the cheapest foods out there. Even though I’ve kept this list quite general, the items might vary depending on where you live.
Here are five ways to keep plant-based eating affordable:
Buy food that is inherently budget-friendly
What are the cheapest foods out there? Usually, plant-based foods which are high in carbohydrates or plant protein, such as lentils, potatoes, bananas, oats, beans, peas, and rice as well as produce that is in season. They’ll also get you many nutrients and will keep you full for long.
Shop at lower-price grocery stores like Aldi or Walmart
There is nothing wrong with shopping at supermarkets that are cheaper than others. They allow you to get all the plant-based goodies that you want and need, without having to burn a hole in your wallet. Everyone’s happy!
Shop in season as best as possible
Fresh produce can become quite expensive, especially when it is not in season. This is why buying fruit and veggies that are in season will not only help you save some money, but they are more likely locally sourced and usually taste better, too. Talk about a win-win!
Use meal planning and meal prepping to your advantage
Meal prepping or just being very organized about your food plans can be a great budget tool. When you go grocery shopping with a list, this avoids impulse purchases, buying too much food, and wasting food. If you plan ahead, you may be able to use special offers or coupons to your advantage. Plus, you are not dependent on eating out or using meal delivery services, which can be on the pricier side.
Buying ingredients in higher quantities is most likely cheaper than buying smaller amounts of the same item. Costco and Amazon are some of my personal favorites for things like nuts, seeds, and nutritional yeast that can keep your pantry stocked for a long time without going bad.
